Nappy waste can present a risk to the environment, so responsible service is crucial. Under regulations, nappy waste is regarded as controlled waste; businesses and premises that include a nappy waste amenity and baby changing must offer a hygienic and responsible solution.

Correct disposal from an environmental point of view is important. Nappies contain plastics, organic waste and chemicals which offer a risk of contaminating soil and water, resulting in long-term environmental damage. Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, all businesses must dispose of waste correctly, and this includes nappy and offensive waste. Failure to have offensive waste collections will result in penalties for non-compliance.
